KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The month-long George Town Festival to be held in Penang beginning Aug 1 would see trolleys being used by dancers to express their creativity.

Rather unconventional, but five shopping carts would be the main subject for the dancers from the Sydney Dance Company in Australia to showcase their art along the streets of George Town.

Nick Wales who manages the troupe, said ballet, parkour and various other acrobatic feats would be infused into the improvisations, with the electric violin and piano in accompaniment.

George Town Festival director Joe Sidek said the trolley dances were among 90 performances to be staged at the festival expected to draw more than 200,000 visitors.

"Malaysia will also present our unique Kelantan Mak Yong and Wayang Kulit traditional dance-drama," he told Bernama here Thursday.

A tale of two elite Penang families titled, '2 Houses', would be presented in a theatre directed by Lim Yu-Beng.

Joe also said 150 arts enthusiasts from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, who called themselves Urban Sketchers Penang were collaborating to produce pieces of art on George Town.

"Their finished works would be displayed in the cafes and 'kopitiams' around the city," he said.

Aside from that, there would be a drama portraying a married couple from Kerala, India whose idea of expressing their love for each other was through food, as in 'Food For Thought', while a 'circus circus' would be performed by Japan, China and Finland collaboratively.

Joe who has been directing the festival since its first edition in 2010 said Penang was a very appropriate location because of its uniqueness and the diversity of its community, "hence why UNESCO recognised it as a world heritage site".

"The festival is also unique in that it is not set in one place but moves around George Town so that more people can watch the perform! ances. Among the locations involved are Armenian Street, Galle! ry A2, Dewan Sri Pinang and Macalister Mansion," he said.

He said there was no charge for the gala except at certain locations where an entrance fee of between RM20 and RM200 would be imposed.
