Smith-Rivera jumper helps Georgetown top M... - Washington Times

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, January 7, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) - D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera wasn't having much of a game, and Georgetown as a whole had scored only one field goal in nearly 15 minutes, allowing Marquette to cut an 11-point lead to one.

But the Big East preseason player of the year made the shot that reversed the momentum, driving into traffic and nailing a 10-foot jumper with a little more than one minute remaining. He then made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds as the Hoyas held off the Golden Eagles 65-59 Tuesday night.

"If he can't close and help us hang on, then we're in trouble," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "He did what he was supposed to do at the end of games."

Smith-Rivera finished with 15 points on 4-for-10 shooting, including 2 for 7 from 3-point range. Jabril Trawick added 13 points, and Joshua Smith had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoyas (10-4, 2-1) in their first game since dropping out of the AP Top 25.

Georgetown has won two straight after a loss at Xavier to open conference play. An impressive freshman class has stepped up in both games, but junior point guard Smith-Rivera remains the undisputed leader.

"I just knew down the stretch that my team eventually was going to rely on me to show up," Smith-Rivera said, "so I just moved to make a play and stop the bleeding a little bit."

Luke Fischer battled foul trouble to go 6 for 6 from the field and score 13 points for the Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-2). Matt Carlino had 16 points but went 2 for 8 from 3-point range.

Georgetown led 42-31 early in the second half, but the Hoyas stopped making buckets and relied on free throws as the lead dwindled. Smith's layup with a 4:03 to play ended the long field-goal dry spell.

Duane Wilson made it a one-point game with 2:06 remaining when he banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but Smith-Rivera's basket with 1:10 to play gave Georgetown a 56-53 cushion. Carlino missed a 3-point attempt that would've tied it in the final minute, and L.J. Peak made two free throws as the Hoyas began icing the game from the free-throw line.

Georgetown made 21 of 24 free throws in the second half, helping compensate for a 6-for-18 half from the field, including 0 for 6 on 3-pointers.

"We held them to two field goals in the last 16 minutes of the game, and so I have a hard time faulting our defense," Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said. "The only thing I'd say is we have got to learn to play our defense without fouling."

TIP-INS

Marquette: The Golden Eagles committed the same number of turnovers (15) as the Hoyas, but Georgetown converted the miscues into 19 points to Marquette's 10.

Georgetown: Freshman F Trey Mourning was not in uniform as a precaution after developing concussion-like symptoms. … The Hoyas had assists on 11 of their 13 first-half baskets.

Bracketology has Georgetown and GW headed in same direction - Washington Post (blog)

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, January 6, 2015

January 5 at 4:01 PM

In his first bracketology of the season, ESPN college basketball analyst Joe Lunardi has George Washington as a No. 8 seed in the South region while he pegs Georgetown as a No. 9 seed in the East.

He projects both D.C. universities, located less than two miles apart, to play opening-round games in Charlotte as he predicts the Colonials to open with LSU (and could face Virginia in the second round) and the Hoyas to square off with Stanford.

George Washington burst onto the national scene by upsetting No. 11 Wichita State to win the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu en route to an 11-3 start this season. The Colonials are also ranked 23rd in the country in  RPI at .6254.

Boasting one of Coach John Thompson III's youngest squads he's ever had in the nation's capital, the Hoyas bounced back from a 17-point loss New Year's Eve at Xavier with a 76-61 win over Creighton at the Verizon Center on Saturday.

Georgetown, a 9-4 squad that ranks 37th in RPI at .5994, has losses to Wisconsin, Butler and Kansas but has big wins over Florida and Indiana.

This is Lunardi's first week of bracketology and will continue weekly until Selection Sunday on March 15. The Charlotte region will host second and third round games March 20 and 22 at the Time Warner Cable Arena, the same venue the NBA's Hornets call home.

Golden Eagles look for first road win against Georgetown - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Posted by Unknown

Washington, D.C. — Through one week of conference play, going on the road has been a dangerous proposition for teams in the Big East.

Home teams have held serve in nine of the league's first 10 games. Butler knocked off St. John's to claim the conference's only road win Saturday.

"You have to win every game at home if you want to have a chance at even being in the top five of the Big East," Marquette senior forward Juan Anderson said. "It is a great conference."

Marquette (9-5, 1-1 Big East) hasn't won a true road game yet this season going into the 6 p.m. Tuesday tilt against Georgetown (9-4, 1-1) at the Verizon Center. The Golden Eagles fell at Ohio State in November and dropped their Big East opener to DePaul in Chicago last Wednesday.

Head coach Steve Wojciechowski may only have two Big East games under his belt, but he recognizes the intensity of conference road games.

"I'd stack our conference up against anyone," Wojciechowski said. "It's very difficult to win on the road in this league. You look at the schools in this league and their amazing basketball traditions and support and fan bases, and we have some great coaches in our league.

"You put all those ingredients together and I think you have one of if not the best basketball conferences in the country."

Awaiting Marquette is a Georgetown team that was ranked No. 25 last week in The Associated Press poll before falling at Xavier. The Hoyas have been battle-tested this season, ranking 18th in the country in strength of schedule thus far. Their three non-conference losses came against No. 4 Wisconsin (68-65), No. 12 Kansas (75-70) and Butler (64-58) in a rare conference matchup at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas.

Over the past five years, Marquette hasn't had much success at the Verizon Center. The Golden Eagles lost four in a row there before pulling out an 80-72 overtime victory last season.

Anderson is making his fourth trip to the nation's capital and says it's always tough visiting Georgetown.

"We have to have better leadership; we have to learn how to win on the road," Anderson said. "We gave up two on the road in Ohio State and DePaul."

Asked to describe what stands out about the Hoyas, Anderson didn't hesitate.

"Their offense," he said. "They are big on back cuts. You have to be disciplined on defense. Sometimes we get out of the realm of being disciplined....When you do that, Georgetown makes you pay."

The Georgetown players who could make Marquette pay for defensive lapses are preseason conference player of the year D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and mammoth center Josh Smith.

Smith-Rivera has been the go-to guy for Georgetown. The 6-foot-3 junior guard is the fifth-highest scorer in the conference at 14.2 points per game. He also contributes 4.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest.

Smith will literally be a huge challenge in the post for Marquette. The 6-foot-10, 350-pound senior is unlike any player the Golden Eagles have seen this season and has put up solid numbers with 12.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

The upperclassmen aren't the only ones powering the Hoyas, though. Three freshmen — L.J. Peak (9.9 ppg.), Paul White (7.2 ppg.) and Tre Campbell — scored in double figures in Georgetown's win over Creighton on Saturday. Peak had 14, Campbell 13 and White added 10.

After having its four-game win steak snapped at DePaul last week, Marquette hopes that Saturday's victory over Providence is the start of another streak, and Tuesday brings another milestone — Wojciechowski's first road win.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 are closed north of Georgetown after a vehicle fatally struck a 35-year-old man at about 8:45 p.m., police said.

All traffic is being detoured onto the access road at the exit for FM 972, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation said.

The man was trying to cross the highway when he was struck by the vehicle, Georgetown police spokesman Roland Waits said. The southbound lanes of the highway will probably be closed for several hours, Waits said.

The Georgetown Police Department is investigating the incident.

Georgetown Continues Roll By Defeating Creighton Behind Freshmen - Vavel.com

Posted by Unknown

Georgetown managed to overcome a slow start Saturday thanks to their freshmen. Freshman L.J. Peak, Paul White, and Tre Campbell all scored in double figures for the Hoyas. Those freshmen were a key part of the 43 point second half that separated Georgetown from Creighton.

"Coach has confidence in us, putting freshman out there," said Campbell. "So, I mean, we've just got to play with confidence, and i think we should be fine."

L.J. Peak had 14 points and Tre Campbell 13 for Georgetown (9-4, 1-1 Big East). Joshua Smith shook off early foul trouble to finish with 16 points. The Georgetown freshman provided 25 out of the 29 points during one span, including 13 in a row at one point.

Devin Brooks and Zach Hanson each added 11 for Creighton(9-6, 0-2). This loss is Creighton's third straight, all on their three game road trip. Poor shooting by Creighton hurt them in the game as they shot 30% from the field and 20% from three.

This group of freshman for Georgetown is the first trio of freshman to all score in double figures since 2005. Georgetown led 33-31 at halftime because Issac Copeland hit a big jump shot as time expired. Tre Campbell hit an early second half three to top off Georgetown's 15-2 run which made the score 39-31. Later in the contest Georgetown hit a three with about 7 minutes to go to give the Hoyas a 61-46 edge.

"These guys are all fearless," said Joshua Smith, senior. "I don't see them as freshman, if that makes any sense."

Georgetown will next play Marquette on January 6th at 7:00 PM EST. Creighton will next go up against DePaul on January 7th at 9:00 PM EST.
