Now that King Juan Carlos of Spain has announced that he will abdicate and pass the crown off to his son, Crown Prince Felipe, learning more information about the king-to-be has become a priority. A priority not only for those with Spanish ties, but the world as a whole as King Juan Carlos' future successor takes over to embody the hope of an entire nation. And while many intriguing facts have popped up over the past 12 hours about Prince Felipe, one local connection easily caught my eye: the soon-to-be king of Spain earned his master's at Georgetown University right here in Washington, D.C.

While 46-years-old today and currently residing in his own country, Prince Felipe – whose full name is Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y de Grecia – traveled abroad for many of his young academic years. High school in Canada, then back to Madrid for college, Prince Felipe's final semesters as a student took place in the District.

Prince Felipe didn't travel alone, though. While at Georgetown he found a roommate in another royal heir: his cousin Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece and Prince of Denmark.

Their dorm must have been the envy of every single student at Georgetown given their combined family riches. And their king-to-be status? Well that probably helped them out in the girl department, too. Can you imagine the two princes casually walking into The Tombs, grabbing a beer and enjoying life as all the women swoon? Ah, to be an heir to the throne ... but I digress.

Prince Felipe received his two-year master of science in foreign service in 1995, at which point both he and Pavlos' families flew into D.C. for the ceremonial procession. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia could be spotted among the crowd of proud parents, both receiving honorary degrees from Georgetown during graduation.

To this day, Prince Felipe remains a loyal patron to Georgetown. He's listed as an honorary member of the Master of Science in Foreign Service Advisory Board. Although, whether the soon-to-be king will attend an alumni weekend while wearing the crown is not yet known, but fingers crossed Prince Felipe decides to grace the Georgetown crowd with his presence.
