Georgetown University announced Tuesday that D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson will be joining Georgetown's board of directors later this year. An alum and former professor at Georgetown, Henderson has the connection and the education background required of a strong university leader, but is there a conflict of interest?
Henderson, unsure of how ethical taking on a position at Georgetown would be considering her full-time job as the District's schools chancellor, approached the D.C. Board of Ethics and Government Accountability to seek guidance on whether she can serve on Georgetown's board while continuing as chancellor.
Director of Government Ethics Darrin P. Sobin gave her the go-ahead, saying: "Here, your service on the Board would be part-time, and I otherwise find nothing to suggest that that service would conflict significantly with the performance of your duties or impair the efficient operation of DCPS."
Henderson still must abide by a few rules to ensure she doesn't cross any lines. For example, since Georgetown has two contracts with DCPS, Henderson has agreed to recuse herself in both of her roles from taking part in either contract or any other partnerships that may come about in the future. Sobin also advised Henderson not to "accept gifts or anything of value from Georgetown for your service or otherwise as long as you are DCPS chancellor."
Henderson will serve a three-year term at Georgetown and will officially start her service in October. She confirmed to The Washington Post that while she has accepted the job, she is not being paid or receiving any work perks, like an upgrade to her men's basketball season tickets. "I'm paying for my same old seats, just like every year," she said.
