Large screens in KL for telecast of ceremony honouring MH17 victims – Bernama - The Malaysian Insider

City folks can watch the live telecast of the ceremony to honour the victims of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 tragedy on a large screen at Dataran Merdeka tomorrow.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic) said besides Dataran Merdeka, a large screen would also be set up for the same purpose at the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) building in Jalan Raja Laut.

"The large screens are put up to enable the city folks to follow the ceremony on the arrival of the remains and the respect given by the government," he told reporters after a programme for city folks and tourists to honour victims of MH17 at Jalan Raja Laut, in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said city folks could also honour victims of MH17 by expressing their feelings and thoughts on 28 panels which had been erected in the city area for the purpose.

"About 30,000 people have signed, as well as written condolences, on the panels, as well as encouraging words for MAS," he added.

The remains of 20 of the victims of the tragedy are scheduled to arrive at the KL International Airport at about 10am tomorrow. Forty-three Malaysians died in the tragedy.

Cinemas doing their part

Meanwhile, the two largest cinema chains in the country, TGV Cinemas (TGV) and Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), will also observe the Day of National Mourning tomorrow for victims of the MH17 tragedy.

TGV chief executive officer Gerald V. Dibbayawan said the chain would issue a reminder to patrons to be ready for a minute's silence during the simultaneous time set for the whole country, expected to be anytime from 10.30am. 

"All day Friday, we will be asking patrons in 22 TGV cinemas throughout the country to observe a minute's silence according to their religious beliefs," he told Bernama today. 

TGV normally screens its first movie for the day after 10am.

Dibbayawan said as a mark of mourning, all TGV employees would wear dark clothes to work tomorrow, while the front office staff such as those at the counters would wear black.

Meanwhile, a GSC spokesman said its staff would also wear dark or black clothes while the National Day decorations in the chain's cinemas would be taken down for a day.

"As a mark of solidarity, advertisements screened on the plasma televisions in all 28 cinemas in the country would be in black and white," he told Bernama.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek had said that the nation would observe a minute's silence simultaneously tomorrow, during the ceremony honouring the victims of the MH17 tragedy.

Ahmad Shabery was reported to have asked all television and radio stations to not screen excessive entertainment on Friday while cinemas were asked to cooperate in honouring the ceremony.

Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft is believed to have been shot down over the troubled country.

Besides the Malaysians, nationals from the Netherlands, Australia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Canada and New Zealand were also on board the ill-fated aircraft. – Bernama, August 21, 2014.
