IPOH: The state government has tasked the Ipoh City Council (MBI) to come up with a long-term plan to ensure the town remains liveable and sustainable.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir also wants the council to create icons for the city.
"I want the council to come out with a concept plan for the next 10 years on what Ipoh is going to be like. I want the council to then work towards achieving the plan.
"What is important is that Ipoh has to be a liveable and vibrant place to attract more people to stay here," he said after meeting state and council officials here on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by state legislative assembly speaker Datuk S.K. Devamany.
On the icons, Zambry said they should have unique qualities and be eco-friendly.
He cited the Polo Ground as an example, where thousands of people gather daily for exercise or leisure activities.
"We want more of such icons to portray the image of Ipoh. We have quite a few here.
"It is just that the council has to work on promoting them, besides improving their infrastructures.
"We want these icons, not only to be recognised in Ipoh but also in the country and the world, if possible."
Zambry said the council had also agreed to increase its allocation to fight urban poverty and ensure that city folk enjoy a better quality of life. By Audrey Dermawan
