The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 are closed north of Georgetown after a vehicle fatally struck a 35-year-old man at about 8:45 p.m., police said.

All traffic is being detoured onto the access road at the exit for FM 972, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation said.

The man was trying to cross the highway when he was struck by the vehicle, Georgetown police spokesman Roland Waits said. The southbound lanes of the highway will probably be closed for several hours, Waits said.

The Georgetown Police Department is investigating the incident.
