WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The 12-foot tall floodgates that protect the Georgetown Waterfront at Washington Harbor are due to come down at 10 a.m. Tuesday, local restaurants say they've been told, after successfully protecting businesses from flood damage this past weekend, but not from receding sales.
On Monday evening, the flood waters had pulled back from the boardwalk, leaving puddles behind. Crews could be seen power washing parts of the waterfront, before they're scheduled to sanitize the 57 flood gates early Tuesday prior to their removal.
A delay in deploying the floodgate system in 2011 led to millions of dollars of damages to businesses.
When the gates are raised, though, business to local restaurants usually drop while their waterfront view is blocked.
