IPOH: Construction of the long waited modern crematorium to replace the 100-year-old traditional cremation and burial ground in Jalan Madras, Buntong, here will soon take off with completion scheduled next May.

The idea to have a modern crematorium was mooted 20 years ago and things started to move only two years ago.

The state government allocated RM1.3 million for the project at the existing site which used firewood but it did not go down well with some of the residents in the city.

They preferred the traditional method of cremating the dead with firewood.
Some 80 households in the vicinity also feared that the project would create parking problems.

Ipoh Hindu Devasthana Paripalana Sabah, the committee which manages the existing cremation ground, has also selected the contractor.

State Non Islamic Affairs, Health, Public Transport, National Integration and New Villages committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the state made the decision with the peoples' interest at heart and the project would go ahead as planned.

"There were some hiccups earlier and now we have listened to all the views of the government departments and agencies which would ensure the machinery and method comply with the clean air regulation," he told reporters after chairing a meeting here today.

Among the representatives present at the meeting were from Department of Environment, Public Works Department, Ipoh City Council, Land and Mines Department and police who had given their feedback.

"We have come to a conclusion that the long overdue project has to be implemented," Mah said.
