Kah Kim, 34, a businessman from Kuala Lumpur, described the benches as unique yet practical.

"It is actually a very smart design," said Siew.

"It looks complicated but it serves its purpose," he said while sitting on an orange Figure #23 bench.

Siew said it was the first time he had seen anything like this.

The orange and black benches, made from twisted poles, were created by local artist Azman Ismail.

Souvenir shop helper Khoo Theng Sing, 35, said the benches were also a favourite spot for taking photographs.

"Everyone who passes this way will definitely stop to take pictures.

"Some of them even sit here while waiting for their turn to take a picture at the bicycle mural," he said.

Khoo said although the benches were hot in the afternoons, none of the tourists complained about it.

The benches are sponsored by the National Visual Arts Gallery as part of the George Town Festival project titled "The Chairs – Secret Garden of Earthly Delights II."

Medical students Morgane Delfanti, 25, and Calorine Ghouti, 24, from Paris, said they loved the unique benches for their design and colours.

"My favourite is the orange bench … I love the colour.

"They should have more of them," said Delfani.

The two benches were launched by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz on Saturday.
