KUALA LUMPUR: Electronic pop act Pet Shop Boys brought the high-tech dazzle of its live shows to Kuala Lumpur, for the first time in its near-30-year career.

The United Kingdom-based duo performed their first-ever Malaysian gig at Stadium Negara, Wednesday with the help of darting lasers, smoke effects, widescreen images and two dancers.

The Pet Shop Boys, who are singer Neil Tennant, 60, and keyboardist Chris Lowe, 54, played its '80s hits It's A Sin, Suburbia, West End Girls and its version of Elvis Presley's Always On My Mind to an enthusiastic crowd, in a solid, 90-minute show.

The duo also played its stomping '90s version of the Village People's Go West, with Tennant wearing a tengkolok.

The duo also played material from its most recent dance album, Electric.

The show was part of the group's Electric tour, which began last March in Mexico and winds down in Taiwan on Sept 28.

The Pet Shop Boys are regarded as pop royalty in the United Kingdom, having sold 50 million records worldwide.

The duo played at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012.
