KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17:

Ipoh has effectively become a subsidiary hub for hybrid airline Malindo Air, which commenced its passenger services today from the silver state's capital to Johor Baru and Medan in Indonesia.

This is following the launch of the Subang-Ipoh thrice weekly flights earlier this month, it said in a statement.

Malindo Air is currently offering promotional fares of RM70 for the Ipoh-Medan all-inclusive one-way trip while the Ipoh-Johor Baru fare starts from RM79 all-inclusive for the one-way trip.

The frequency of flights to Medan and Johor Baru are daily and four times weekly respectively.

Malindo Air chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy said the new flights to Johor Baru and Medan are expected to encourage more passenger movement at the newly upgraded Sultan Azlan Shah Airport.

"The introduction of flights from Ipoh is part of our strategy to enhance our route network in Peninsular Malaysia.

"Ipoh has plenty of potential when it comes to tourism, particularly ecotourism and medical tourism. Moreover, we felt connecting Ipoh and Medan will drive tourism in both cities and spur economic development at the same time."

Malindo Air's main hubs are at KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2) and SubangSkypark in Selangor.
