'STEAL-BY-NIGHT' PROJECTS: The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur must answer! - Malaysia Chronicle

Indeed it is unthinkable that there are contractors commissioned to work even at night doing clearing and tree cutting jobs with total disregard for the peace and quiet that residents deserve as they retire for the night.

The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur perhaps can shed some light on these 'steal-by-night' approved projects.

The case in question refers to Kampung Attap right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, behind the Chinese Assembly Hall. A contractor was busy cutting into pieces with a noisy chain-saw tree stumps that were cleared earlier in the day. And all these from 11pm right through into past midnight.

Hired 'thugs'

When approached by a disturbed resident, the lorry driver appeared threatening with his response. It seems that no one can question why and who approved the noisy work being carried out so late into the night.

The driver of the lorry carting the debris appeared arrogant with a show of intimidating might in attitude with his matching words, "tak payah tanya lah".

Since when did contractors and their hired workers become so intimidating and burly? Looks like the rakyat have no control over such errant behaviors?

Or is it already a trend to have thugs to operate outside of approved working time?

Mind you, if it is an emergency operation no one will complain. In all likelihood, Malaysian residents will even lend or volunteer a helping hand. That was the case too recently when the same vicinity was hit by a freak storm costing the lives of two men-in-blue.

But this is not an emergency. It is a project commissioned and being rushed through to completion with absolute disregard to residents' rights to a peaceful night of rest.

Don't hide behind red-tape

What is coming of this nation? Where is our ethical bearing? Doea such seeming development always have to be at the expense of fundamental rights accorded to citizens, especially in being entitled to a night of peaceful sleep and rest?

Let the pictures (attached) do the talk and the work.

So perhaps the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur can explain. And let the Mayor know too that this letter is also a legitimate means of highlighting what is not right. There is therefore no reason for anyone within the mighty corridors of DBKL to retort with, "we cannot act because there is no report lodged".

We cannot go on and on disregarding fundamental rights to life and rest. We cannot let people to take the laws into their own hands and get away scot free. - MAILBAG
