Woman killed in express bus-trailer crash in Ipoh

IPOH: A woman died in an accident involving an express bus and a trailer at Kilometre 246.9 of the North-South Expressway (southbound), here early this morning.

In the 2 am incident, bus passenger, Zaiton Mohd Shariff, 59, of Rembau, Negeri Sembilan died at the scene due to severe injuries.

Ipoh Public Order and Traffic chief, DSP Wan Sharuddin Wan Omar said initial investigations revealed that the the driver of the express bus, which was on its way from Kuala Perlis to Putrajaya, had lost control of the vehicle.

"The bus, carrying 28 passengers, later hit the steel barrier on the left before crashing into the back of a trailer," he said when contacted by Bernama here.

He said the trailer was carrying ceiling boards.

He said as a result of the accident, two other passengers, Mohd Sukairi Wan Mustapha, 39, broke his leg while Mohamad Taufiq Osman, 23, was slightly injured on the ankle.

Wan Sharuddin said the dead victim was taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here for a post-mortem while the two other injured victims were treated at the same hospital. The drivers of both vehicles were unhurt.

"The express bus driver, 40, of Bukit Rambai, Melaka was held to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
